Proud to be Filipino

Last August 12, 2011, my Mom And I flew Hongkong trying to be adventurous. I posts as my Mom's tour guide in our Hongkong trip, provided it was my second time to visit the place (I've been there last January 2009) and I was courageous enough to be in the foreign land knowing Hongkong is just a small place, with a good transportation connections. But when I was in the place, prepared and studied the place to where we have to go and ready by all my pamphlets  printed, it was quite difficult. I just realized, the local people are cold and uncooperative. When we get off from the Airport, I decided to ride buses as we are in a matter of thriftiness to our trip as much as possible. So I know whats the name of the place the we need to get off the bus, but we don't know how it looks and plus Chinese writings. For me, it was more easier if we asked the driver to stop us at the bus stop, where we need to get off, but you weren't even finish saying your sentence, they immediately dismissed you., so rude. They can't even say sorry I don't know the place, no English, or whatever, but not dismissal. It was shocking drivers don't know where to stop, imagining they're not like Philippines in which whenever the passenger wishes to stop, the bus will stop, but with them they have routes, they have specific bus stops to stop, they cannot just gave you courtesy as a visitor to their place. It is so unlikely to Filipinos. Our drivers might be wearing a holed and dirty shirts, but when they are asked to by a foreigner, they would gladly and willingly want to be of help. Like in our case, surely our drivers will deliver you at the doorstep or gateway of the place you've looked for, or if not, it will take time to stop and talked and give a more detail instructions in finding the place, or if not would gladly endorse you to by standers who can help you find a place. No matter how low the livelihood of Pinoys such as sikad driver (drives with a three wheeled bicycle), street vendor selling cigarette or garbage collector once they're asked, they could at least say yes, no, there, over there, right, left with facial expressions of good faith to help. This is why I would say, no matter how our lives so difficult, being hospitable is our Filipino values that we should be proud of.I'm proud to be Pinoy.

  1. Note* the writer did not mean low livelihood as undignified, low livehood she referred it as low income.
